WHAT IS SCRABBLE?

Scrabble is a classic crossword game that has been enjoyed by friends and family for many years. Scrabble is the ultimate crossword game in which every letter counts. When you play Scrabble you will take turns making words and each letter has a value. There are premium squares that will double and triple your scores. For example, if you play a Q on a triple-letter score, you get a nice boost in points. Or if you use all 7 letters in one turn you get an extra 50 points. Like most games, the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Scrabble was created by Hasbro. It is a great game to spend time with family and friends. However if you would like to get a leg up on the competition you can use our Scrabble Word Finder above to help you win the game.

HOW DO YOU PLAY SCRABBLE?

The official Scrabble rules are relatively basic. However, the game is very complex and many times people at home make their own "house rules" when playing Scrabble. Here are the basic rules of how to play Scrabble:

WHAT WORDS ARE YOU ALLOWED TO USE?

The official Scrabble dictionary is available online and in print. Hasbro also has an official online Scrabble Dictionary to help with gameplay. You can also find the Scrabble Dictionary on Wordplays.com. Before you start a game, it's important that all players agree on which dictionary to use.

Wordplays.com also offers additional official Scrabble Word Lists.

To search Scrabble word lists by number or infrequent letters, check out the Scrabble Word Lists page.

WHAT WORDS CANNOT BE USED?

Most of the time these are words that are not in the chosen dictionary source. However, foreign words and slang words may be agreed on prior to the start of the games. Keep in mind that in tournament play slang and foregin words might not be allowed.

Playing a two-letter word is a great way to score points with very few letters. Oftentimes you might question whether or not certain two-letter words are valid in the game of Scrabble. Our comprehensive two-letter word list will help settle the score and define any tricky plays.

WHICH LETTER IS WORTH THE MOST?

The letters Q and Z are both worth 10 points which are the highest-point letters in Scrabble. Here are the Scrabble points for the other letters:

  • 10 Points: Q, Z
  • 8 Points: J, X
  • 5 Points: K
  • 4 Points: F, H, V, W, Y
  • 3 Points: B, C, M, P
  • 2 Points: D, G
  • 1 Points: A, E, I, L, N, O, S, T, R, U

ARE YOU ALLOWED TO MAKE TWO WORDS?

The short answer is sort of. When you are playing and laying your tiles, you can add a word to an existing word, but it must go in the same direction. You can also do something called parallel words or hooking. Basically, there are three main ways to form new words in Scrabble:

  • You can add more letters to a word that’s already been placed on the board.
  • You can place a word at a right angle, using one of the letters already on the board or adding a letter to an existing word.
  • You can place a complete word parallel to a word already on the board, as long as the adjacent letters all form complete words.

HOW MANY PLAYERS CAN PLAY?

The traditional board game is for two to four players.

WHO GOES FIRST?

Each player draws a letter from the tiles and the player with the closest to “A” goes first. The next player to go will be the player to the left.

HOW DOES THE GAME END?

The game ends in two ways. All the letters have been drawn or a player uses their last letter. The player with the most points wins.

ARE YOU ALLOWED TO PASS YOUR TURN?

It depends on the rules you are using. The official Scrabble rules allow you to pass your turn and also exchange all or some of your tiles for new ones. A good rule of thumb is to finalize the rules before starting the game.

TOP 5 TRICKS TO WIN AT SCRABBLE

Being a walking dictionary who knows all different types of words is helpful, but you can do little tricks like pluralizing a word or being sneaky at tile placement. Here are some tricks to help you win at Scrabble.

TIP #1: USE OUR SCRABBLE WORD TOOL TO USE ALL 7 TILES AT ONCE

Use our Scrabble Word Finder online tool to generate a seven letter word and get those 50 extra points. Scoring the most points is how you win.

TIP #2: LEARN HOW TO USE PARALLEL WORDS OR HOOKING

This is when you build off an existing word. Many times you add an “S” to pluralize a word, then you can build a separate word off of that “S”.

TIP #3: MAKE UP RULES AS YOU GO

Do you like to argue? Then make up Scrabble rules on the fly to confuse and frustrate your opponent. Many people use “house rules”, so feel free to say things like, “this is how I always played.” You will be surprised how often this trick works.

TIP #4: ANALYZE YOUR TILES AND USE THEM

A great way to lose at Scrabble is to hold on to letters for too long and get penalized for their value. For example, if you have a Q or a Z you will get penalized for 10 points each. Holding on to high point letters can help you win or lose a game.

TIP #5: ANALYZE THE BOARD

Recognizing when you are able to take advantage or double and triple scores is key to winning the game. Also being able to analyze the existing words on the board will make it easier to predict the likely words that can be built. Try to envision words that use Z, Q, J and X in them to maximize your score.

HISTORY OF SCRABBLE

The game of Scrabbleâ“’ was developed by an architect in New York by the name of Alfred Mosher Butts during the Great Depression. With board games, dice/card games, and letter games (e.g. crossword puzzles) standing the test-of-time, Butts combined all three of these concepts together! The classic board game cycled through many names, starting with Lexiko in 1933 and then switching to “Criss-Cross Words” with a 15x15 board in 1938.

The patent for the game changed hands many times and landed on its present day name in 1958 after Butts partnered with James Brunot. In the 1950’s Jack Strauss, Macy’s president, made the first large order of the game and in 1952, Selchow & Righter Company, a game manufacturer, bought the rights to sell Scrabbleâ“’. In 1972, Selchow & Righter bought the Scrabbleâ“’ trademark ownership from Brunot and in 1986 Coleco Industries purchased Selchow & Righter.

Finally, Scrabbleâ“’ was purchased in 1989 from Coleco by Hasboro, where the rights and manufacturing remain today.

FUN SCRABBLE FACTS:

  • There are an estimated one million missing Scrabbleâ“’ tiles around the world. If you’re an avid Scrabbleâ“’ fan, you may be the owner of many of these missing pieces!
  • In Great Britain, 53% of all homes own a copy of Scrabbleâ“’, and in the United States, about 33% of all homes own a set.
  • National Scrabbleâ“’ Day is April 13th, Alfred Mosher Butts’ birthday! Butts passed away in 1993 at 93 years old.
  • To date, the highest score on a single word is 1782. Benjamin Woo played the word Oxyphenbutazone during a Scrabbleâ“’ competition. He played the word across the top of the board, hitting three Triple Word Score squares whilst also making seven crosswords downwards.
  • If all the Scrabbleâ“’ tiles ever produced were lined up, they would stretch for more than 50,000 miles!
