hangar

A hangar is a large, enclosed, garage-like structure, designed to hold aircraft or spacecraft in protective storage. Most hangars are built of metal, but other materials such as wood and concrete are also used. The word hangar comes from the Middle French hanghart ("enclosure near a house"), of Germanic origin, from Frankish *haimgard ("home-enclosure"or also "fence around a group of houses"), from *haim + gard . Hangars are used to protect airplanes from weather and from direct sunlight. They are also used for the maintenance, repair, manufacture, assembly, and storage of aircraft on airfields, at airports, or on aircraft carriers and ships.
