WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SOLVE AN ANAGRAM?

Consider these tips for tackling anagrams.

  • Rearrange the letters. The simplest and quickest way to find new words is to rearrange the letters to see if words will appear. Many times when you rejumble to letters you will automatically create words.

  • Look for common consonant sounds. Looking for letters that aren’t vowels and pairing them up can help create words quickly. For example there are many words that start with “sh”, “th”, “st”, among others. Once you have the beginning of the word, you can then quickly form the full word.
  • Find the vowels. Find the common pairings for vowels. Many times putting vowels together will help you find a number of different words.
  • Expand your knowledge of words. To be good with anagrams, you must have a large vocabulary and experience with wordplay. When you play Scrabble, Jumble and crossword puzzles it will automatically expand your word knowledge.
  • Make your own anagrams. There is a saying: practice makes perfect. When you consistently work on making your own anagrams you gain experience and knowledge. Start small and get more complicated as you get better at solving anagrams. Using an online anagram generator like our Anagrammer is a great way to get started.
  • Use an automated anagram solver. Let the anagram solver work through the anagrams that you just can’t seem to solve. You will see over time that your experience and knowledge with anagrams will get better and hopefully you will use these tools less and less.

HISTORY OF ANAGRAMS

Anagrams were first seen in the 3th century BC in Greece. It is believed that the poet Lycophron used them in a poem for the King. Other historians believe that they were first seen in the 6th century used by Pythagoras. We know that Plato used them and he believed that they revealed destiny and divinity.

In the 13th-15th century the Romans and early Christians believed that anagrams held mystical meanings. During the Middle Ages, anagrams became popular, being formed with religious texts.

Galileo used anagrams to record his results so that no one could claim credit for his experiments.

The French Court also loved anagrams and Louis the XIII appointed Thomas Billon as the royal anagrammatist.

During the 1800’s anagrams were used to entertain people by using famous people’s names in anagrams.

In the 20th Century, we saw the popularity of crosswords increase and the use of anagrams for puzzle answers became a way to make them more challenging.
